The Last of Us

Review by Matthew Bramhall

YAY!
  • The visuals of the game are stunning, especially the outdoor/ natural environments
  • The main character is a very "human" character, if he was described he isn't a very likable person but naughty dog pull it off very well and most people could understand and empathise with him
  • The game tries to be very minimal with the HUD coming across as gritty and realistic.
  • A nice interesting story and you want to know what happens to these characters.
  • AI of the female character is for the most part very good and protects herself AND you in combat
MEH!
  • The character of Ellie is clearly modelled after the actor Ellen Page and to me comes across as very annoying in places
  • The mechanic of crafting items is limited to a small amount of items
  • The game seems to let you pick if you want to go all guns blazing or stealth but I felt the game punished me if I didn't use stealth
  • Story doesn't deliver on the emotional front and as it seems to leave gaps where things may have happened, sorry to say that could be DLC
  • There are only 4 enemy types in the game and combat can be repetitive
  • Multiplayer feels tacked on and is mainly capture the flag/ deathmatch hybrid
BOO!
  • AI of enemies isn't too logical and can see you when you are behind, other times they could be looking at you and not see you
  • Quick time events really damage the realistic and gritty feel that the game crafts
  • The combat is unfairly hard early on, more so when you try to use guns as the accuracy is horrible, its only later when you upgrade ability's it becomes easier
  • One enemy type can instantly kill you unless you have a specific combo of a skill and item, this is more so in the early stages
  • The hype of the game has damaged the game and blown expectations up too much.
VERDICT

YAY!
